Nelms

Dr. Nelms has been involved in public school education for 19 years. He served as Math and Computer Science teacher for 9 years and 10 years as Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. He served at Dawson ISD, Blooming Grove ISD, Tarkington ISD, Kilgore ISD and Frankston ISD.

Dr. Nelms also started Encourager Christian Academy, Houston, Texas in 1994. While there, he learned of students who could not afford private school tuition. Thus began the pilgrimage to submit an application to the Texas Education Agency to start Calvin Nelms Charter Schools(CNCS). CNCS has been in operation for 20 years and is in excellent standing with the Texas Education Agency both financially and academically.

Dr. Nelms graduated from high school in Longview, Texas in 1966. He entered the US Navy and served as an aviation electrician for 4 years.

Upon completion of the US Navy enlistment, Dr Nelms began his education plan. He received a Bachelors degree in Mathematics from U T Arlington in 1974 and a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Seminary in1978. He next attended Stephen F. Austin University and received a Master of Education in 1986. The last part of his educational achievement was enrollment at Texas A&M University, where he completed a PhD in Industrial, Vocational and Technical Education, which is now called Education Human Resource Development.

Dr. Nelms also taught Computer Science classes at Navarro College, Kilgore College and McLennan Community College.

This is all well and good, but he says in conclusion, “ It is not all about me, It’s all about Jesus.”

Again, “All these degrees are well and good, BUT it’s not about me. It’s also all about the kids. And of course God planted the idea for this Charter School. He led all the way, He still does, and He always will.
